What is a Peppol ID?

A Peppol ID is a unique identifier used to recognize a company or organization within the Peppol network. This ID determines where electronic invoices should be delivered.


By default, a Peppol ID is based on the customer's VAT number or company number. This is also the number used by the customer to register on the Peppol network.


As long as the VAT or company number is correctly filled in at the customer level, sending via Peppol happens automatically and no additional configuration is required.


How to add a Peppol ID?

Do you want to send invoices using a specific Peppol ID instead of the default VAT number? This can easily be configured at the customer level. Follow the steps below:

  1. Go to Customers in the left-hand menu.
  2. Open the customer to whom you want to assign a Peppol ID.
  3. Click Edit (or Create for a new customer).
  4. Navigate to the Peppol ID field.
  5. Select the correct identification type in the Schema field (for example GLN or another Peppol format).
  6. Enter the corresponding number.
  7. Click Update customer or Create customer to save the changes.

From now on, the system will send invoices via the configured Peppol ID instead of the default VAT number.



Determine the Peppol identification code

A list of all Peppol identification codes (the first 4 digits) is available on Peppol BIS Billing 3.0


If you cannot find the correct identification code, you can look it up based on the identifier received from your customer. Enter it on https://peppol.helger.com/public/locale-en_US/menuitem-tools-pid-check-be to retrieve the full Peppol ID.


If no result is found, the provided identifier is not active on Peppol and you should request another identifier from your customer.

Different prefixes:

0208 – Belgian company number

  • What it is: The official Belgian company number from the CBE.
  • Example: 0208:0693727271
  • Usage: Used for Belgian companies, often in scenarios where the company number is central in Peppol communication.

9925 – Belgian VAT number

  • What it is: The Belgian VAT number of the company.
  • Example: 9925:BE0693727271
  • Usage: This is an alternative identification for Belgian companies within Peppol, based on the VAT number instead of the company number.
